Travelodge Kings Cross Royal Scot

We found Travelodge Kings Cross Royal Scot being close to Kings Cross, and is the cheapest out of the central Travelodges. You can also choose Kings Cross Central itself, or Farringdon - which we have stayed at before - all much of a muchness. If you do choose a Travelodge - we would suggest walking from Kings Cross, left out of the station - follow the road past McDonald's, then bare right down Kings Cross Road (A201, right of Honest Burger) then follow the road. The King's Cross Royal Scot is on the left, closely followed by Farringdon TL around 5 minutes further down.

The Prospect of Whitby is London's oldest riverside pub dating back to 1520. Its original flagstone floor survives and the pub also has a rare pewter-topped bar as well as old barrels and ships masts built into the structure. Most areas of the pub have spectacular views over the River Thames, including the beer garden and first floor balcony and terrace.

PUB NO: 2 - Captain Kidd

Captain Kidd, 108 Wapping High Street London E1W 2NE

Captain Kidd, 108 Wapping High Street London E1W 2NE

The Captain Kidd is a pub in Wapping, East London that is named after the seventeenth century pirate William Kidd, who was executed at the nearby Execution Dock. The pub is a Grade II listed building, and was historically used as a coffee warehouse.

The Captain Kidd pub is situated at 108 Wapping High Street, next door to the Marine Police Force headquarters.

The building originates in the 19th century as a three-storey brick house, and was remodelled in the Edwardian era.

To the rear of the building, there is a former workshop that goes out to a wharf. The building, along with 110 Wapping High Street, are now Grade II listed.

In the 1980s, the building became a pub, having previously been a coffee warehouse.  It was named after the seventeenth century pirate William Kidd, who was executed at the nearby Execution Dock in 1701. The pub has a nautical theme and retells the story of Captain Kidd and his execution; the layout of the pub is designed to be similar to a ship’s hulk.  The entrance has a large archway, and the pub has three floors, and has a terrace overlooking the River Thames.

PUB NO: 3 - Town of Ramsgate

Town of Ramsgate, 62 Wapping High Street, London, E1W 2PN

Town of Ramsgate, 62 Wapping High Street, London, E1W 2PN

Town of Ramsgate is a friendly and welcoming pub set in the heart of East London, in the centre of the ancient hamlet of Wapping. We have a great passion for food & drink and believe that a Great British pub should be the heartbeat of its community.

Although the original building dates back to 1545, the National Monuments Record have stated that it was constructed on earlier foundations.

Today it benefits from a listed Grade II, awarded primarily for the pub’s interior; the ‘beamed ceilings, benches, plank paneling and engraved glass screen’ but also for its ‘group value and historical associations.’ Despite later changes, the pub has a distinctive atmosphere.

Come for a meal or just for a drink. Our seasonal food is freshly prepared for you, with a choice of traditional roasts on Sunday.

PUB NO: 5 - The Old Thameside Inn

The Old Thameside Inn, Pickfords Wharf, Clink St, SE1 9DG

The Old Thameside Inn, Pickfords Wharf, Clink St, SE1 9DG

Our pub’s history... where do we start? Long before we opened our doors, the ground on which the Old Thameside stands housed an old spice warehouse on the bustling Pickford’s Wharf docks, which date back to the 16th century.

Back in the day, the original Clink Prison sat on the cobbled street just behind the pub. The private prison of the Bishop of Winchester housed prisoners since the year 860. Southwark Central, London’s oldest Gothic building, also stands behind our magnificent pub. Originally built in 1106 as a Saxon Nunnery, it was rebuilt between 1890 and 1896, and eventually became a Cathedral in 1905.

The Old Thameside Inn certainly isn’t lacking when it comes to history. Our pub was once an old spice warehouse, and the remains of Winchester Palace stand behind The Old Thameside. The cobbled road that runs behind the pub is linked to the original Clink Prison, whilst a full-scale replica of Sir Francis Drake’s famous ship, the Golden Hind, sits beside us on the Thames near you.
